Creating Space For Yourself in a Kitchen Garden

Can we all agree that life is ridiculously busy? Sometimes it feels like we’re always multitasking, on the go, trying to fit more into our 24 hour day, and hoping that somehow we’ll come across a mythical 30 hour day where we’ll “catch up.”

Figuring out how to slow down and actually doing it are two tough tasks. But after a serious health condition, this gardener became committed to creating space in her life for HER. She chose gardening as the way she could reclaim her time and find peace in her life. And I am honored she chose me to help her find her way.

This was such a fun installation. The gardener had two old beds that had seen better days, so I called in my talented friend and finish carpenter, Cory, to build her two beautiful new beds out of cedar. Cory truly does incredible work and I’m excited to see these gorgeous beds stand the test of time.

The gardener had to catch a flight out mid-way through installation day, so her extended family popped by throughout the afternoon to see how the garden was coming along. I could tell by the looks on their faces that this garden was already exceeding all expectations! And when I FaceTimed with the gardener at the end of the day, I could tell that she was absolutely in love with the garden already.

The garden’s center arch trellis creates a beautiful framed entryway to the massive park behind this gardener’s house. I also added an obelisk trellis on either side for extra vertical growing space, which maximize what this gardener will be able to grow in this garden and provide a lot of flexibility with the layout too. And finally, I added natives like coneflowers, catmint, Astors, and prairie grasses on three sides of the garden to create the perfect pollinator zone that will increase harvests in the garden and also provide a bit of privacy in the backyard once the natives mature.

This garden will look even more beautiful as it ages and the natives grow up around it. It will be the perfect, peaceful place for this gardener to continue to make time for herself for years to come.
