On a gorgeous spring Saturday morning, the kind where you open the doors to let the breeze come in to chase out the last remnants of winter away, I put on some fun, upbeat music and started my weekly deep clean of my kitchen. The birds were singing (not just chirping) and early spring flowers were blooming. I could smell the earthiness and freshness of spring in the air.
Even before I started gardening, I could always appreciate those first scents of spring.
I opened my fridge to make sure nothing had expired, and my eyes landed on a clear plastic container with salad greens from the grocery store in it. Or, that was what the container was supposed to have in it.
Instead, I found myself looking at a brown lump. With slimy brown liquid pooling at the bottom.
It was completely inedible. A complete waste of money. And completely frustrating.
But it was only later, when I successfully grew my own salad greens, that I fully comprehended what a waste salad from the grocery store is.
I get it.
- Lettuce loses 30% of nutrients 3 days after harvest.
- Spinach loses 90% of its vitamin C 24 hours after harvest.
- The plastic is bad for the environment.
- The pre-washed salad is more likely to rot quickly.
- Cue the gross, slimy green liquid sitting in the bottom of your plastic salad container.
